About: Repurpose Old Phones into CCTV / Video Surveillance Security Cameras

Welcome to the secure, local-first utility designed to transform any smartphone into a wireless IP camera instantly - no internet, no apps required. Whether you need a quick no-internet baby monitor for a hotel room, a temporary security camera for your front door, or a discreet security camera to monitor your physical space, this free browser-based tool handles it all.

Why use this browser tool instead of a dedicated camera app?

Setup Guide (Step-by-Step)

Deploy your personal video surveillance system in seconds:

  1. Network Setup: Ensure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. No Wi-Fi? Simply turn on the "Mobile Hotspot" on one device and connect the other device to it.
  2. Position the Camera: On the phone you want to use as the camera, open this webpage. Tap "I am the Camera", then "Activate Camera & Microphone". Allow browser permissions. A QR code will appear.
  3. Setup the Monitor: On your laptop, tablet, or second phone, open this page and tap "I am the Monitor". Tap "Scan Camera Phone" and scan the QR code displayed on the camera phone.
  4. Lock the Feed: The Monitor will instantly generate a second QR code. Use the Camera Phone to scan this new code (Step B).
  5. Streaming Active: The devices are now locked in a secure peer-to-peer tunnel. You can use the volume slider on the monitor to hear audio, record the stream, or enable "Blackout Mode" on the camera to dim its screen.

Top Use Cases for a Browser-Based Security Camera

The Hotel Baby Monitor: Traveling with an infant often means spotty hotel Wi-Fi and the inability to connect standard smart baby monitors. By simply turning on your phone's hotspot and connecting your laptop or tablet, you can create an instant, lag-free baby monitor network completely off the grid.

Front Door & Package Monitoring: Set up an old phone in a front-facing window to keep a continuous eye on deliveries and deter package thieves. Since you can record and save the video feed directly to your laptop, you always have evidence if a theft occurs.

The Temporary Pet Cam: Need to see what your dog is doing in the living room while you work in the home office? Prop up an old smartphone, connect it to your home Wi-Fi, and monitor the feed continuously on a background tab on your desktop computer.

Discreet Spy Camera: Because this tool runs in the browser, there is no suspicious "CCTV App" installed on the phone's home screen. Combined with the Blackout Mode, the phone appears powered off and locked, making it an excellent spy cam for verifying security and integrity in your private space.

Elderly Care & Senior Monitoring: Keep a watchful eye on aging family members or relatives when you are in another room. The real-time video surveillance helps ensure they are safe and haven't experienced a fall, while the two-way audio (if unmuted) lets you hear if they call for help.

Garage, Tool Shed, & Driveway Security: Want to make sure your vehicle or tools are secure overnight? Connect an old smartphone to your home Wi-Fi from the garage and leave the stream open on your nightstand device.

Retail & Small Business Cash Register Cam: Small business owners can temporarily monitor point-of-sale registers or stock rooms during busy shifts without investing in expensive permanent video surveillance hardware.

3D Printer & Workshop Observation: Long-running 3D prints or workshop machinery can be dangerous if left completely unmonitored. Use a spare phone to watch the print bed from your office so you can pause it immediately if something fails.

Wildlife & Garden Camera: Love watching the birds at your feeder but opening the window scares them away? Place an old device near the window and watch the live, high-definition nature feed from the comfort of your couch.

Nanny Cam & Babysitter Monitor: Ensure your children are being treated properly while you are busy in another part of the house. The browser-based setup allows you to monitor the situation without installing any invasive permanent cameras.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need to install an app on my phone?

No. This tool leverages native HTML5 WebRTC capabilities. It runs entirely within standard mobile browsers like Chrome, Safari, or Firefox without requiring any downloads.

How far can the camera and monitor be from each other?

The range is dictated by your Wi-Fi router or Mobile Hotspot. As long as both devices are connected to the same local area network and have decent signal strength, the video will stream continuously regardless of physical distance.

Will this drain my phone's battery?

Streaming video uses processing power. It is highly recommended to keep the Camera Phone plugged into a charger for long-term monitoring. Activating the "Blackout Mode" will turn off the screen pixels, significantly extending battery life.

Why is the camera using the front selfie lens?

The tool attempts to request the rear environment camera automatically. However, some older browsers or devices default to the front camera. If this happens, simply flip the phone around to point the screen toward the subject, then enable Blackout Mode.
