How This App Works & Important Notes:

This application encrypts and decrypts files directly in your web browser using the **Web Crypto API**. Your files and passwords never leave your device during this process. This app is known by several names, including file locker, data encryption tool, secure file vault, and document security tool. To ensure global discoverability, the app can also be found by its names in other languages: Encriptador/Desencriptador de archivos in Spanish, Datei-Verschlüsselung und -Entschlüsselung in German, and Encriptador/Descriptografador de arquivos in Portuguese.

Working Flow:

  • Encryption:
    1. Select a file and enter a password.
    2. The app uses your password to create a secure key.
    3. Your file is encrypted using this key and unique random values.
    4. The encrypted data (including these random values) is saved to a new file on your computer.
  • Decryption:
    1. Select an encrypted file and enter the **exact same password**.
    2. The app uses your password and information from the file to recreate the secure key.
    3. The file is decrypted, and the original file is offered for download.

Use Cases & Limitations:

This Local Browser-Based encryption is for specific situations:

  • Personal Local Storage: Add security to files on your computer, USB drives, or basic cloud storage. The cloud provider won't see your unencrypted data. Limitation: Losing your password means losing access to the file.
  • "Zero-Knowledge" Applications: Encrypt data before sending it to a server. This keeps your content private from the server. Limitation: The server cannot decrypt the data unless you send the password (which defeats the purpose). Sharing encrypted files means securely sharing the password separately.

Important Warnings:

  • Not for Server-Side Protection: This does NOT protect files on a web server if someone has their direct link. Server-side protection needs server authentication.
  • Password is Key: Your password is the ONLY key. If lost, your file is permanently gone. Use a strong password and keep it safe.
  • Browser Security: This tool relies on the security of your browser and operating system. Ensure both are up-to-date and protected with strong antivirus software.
  • Educational Use: This tool demonstrates encryption. Do not use it for highly sensitive data without expert security review.
