About this Paper Book Display Tool

What is this tool?

The "Paper Book Display" tool is a client-side web application designed to enhance the readability of online articles and text. It transforms raw article content into a clean, distraction-free format that mimics the comfortable experience of reading a physical book. This Readability Tool also known as Article Reader, Text Converter, Digital Book Display, Document Viewer, or Distraction-Free Reading Tool , aims to provide an optimal reading environment. This tool is also known as a Lector de Artículos (Spanish), Artikel-Reader (German), or Leitor de Artigos (Portuguese). By converting your text and documents into an easy-to-read, book-like format, it helps you absorb information more effectively. All processing is done locally on your device, ensuring your documents remain private.

How does it work?

This tool operates entirely within your web browser using JavaScript. When you paste content or import a file, the JavaScript analyzes the text (and HTML structure if provided) to extract the main article body. It then applies carefully chosen CSS styles to present the content with optimal typography, layout, and color schemes, making it easier on the eyes. For binary file types like PDF and Word documents, it attempts to extract readable text or HTML using client-side libraries loaded on demand. All processing happens directly on your device, ensuring your content remains private and is never sent to any server.

Important Limitation: Due to browser security restrictions (Cross-Origin Resource Sharing - CORS), this tool cannot directly fetch content from external web page URLs. You must copy and paste the article text or HTML, or import a file saved to your device.

Key Features:

  • Content Input: Paste text, HTML, or Markdown directly into the input area.
  • File Import: Load article content from local files such as HTML (.html), Plain Text (.txt), Markdown (.md), and JSON (.json). New experimental support for PDF (.pdf) and Word documents (.docx) is available; the tool will attempt to extract their text or HTML content.
  • Distraction-Free Reading: Intelligent parsing attempts to remove ads, sidebars, and navigation, focusing on the core content. This makes it an excellent Offline Reader for saved articles.
  • Themed Reading: Choose between Light, Sepia, and Dark themes for comfortable reading in any environment.
  • Adjustable Font Size: Easily increase or decrease font size to suit your preference.
  • Client-Side Processing: All operations occur in your browser, ensuring your content remains private and is not sent to any server. Libraries for PDF/Word processing are loaded only when a relevant file type is selected. Your data stays on your device.
  • Responsive Design: Enjoy an optimized reading experience on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.

How to Use This Tool: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Input Your Article Content:
    • Option A (Copy-Paste): Go to any article or webpage, select the main text content (including paragraphs, headings, etc.), copy it, and then paste it into the large "Paste your article here or import file..." text area in the "Input Your Article" section.
    • Option B (Import File): If you have an article saved as an HTML, plain text (.txt), Markdown (.md), JSON (.json), PDF (.pdf), or Word (.docx) file on your computer, click the "Import Article File" button in the "Input Your Article" section and select your file. (Note: While older Word .doc files can be selected, their content may not be fully readable due to their complex binary nature and lack of robust client-side parsing support).
  2. Process the Article:
    • After pasting or importing, click the "Process Article" button in the "Input Your Article" section. The tool will then attempt to clean and display your content in the "Your Article Display" area at the top of the app. A "Processing file..." message will appear during conversion for PDF/Word files.
  3. Adjust Readability (below "Your Article Display"):
    • Themes: Click "Light Theme," "Sepia Theme," or "Dark Theme" buttons located just below the "Your Article Display" content to change the background and text colors.
    • Font Size: Use the "A-" button to decrease font size, "A+" to increase it, and "A" to reset it to the default, also located just below the "Your Article Display" content.
  4. Read Your Article:
    • Scroll through the "Your Article Display" area at the top to read your content in the enhanced, book-like format.
  5. Clear Content:
    • To start with a new article, click the "Clear All Content" button in the "Input Your Article" section. This will clear both the input area and the display.
  6. Toggle App Theme:
    • Use the sun/moon icon at the top right corner of the app to switch the overall app interface between light and dark themes.
